Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Wenatchee: A First-Timer's Guide
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, usually shortened to HBOT, has moved from hospital settings into the wellness world, and a lot of people in Wenatchee have questions about it. What is it actually like inside a chamber? Is it claustrophobic? Who uses it, and who shouldn't? This guide answers the most common questions we hear at Regen + Wellness, our social performance wellness club at 105 South Mission St.
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
During HBOT, you rest inside a pressurized chamber. The chamber is gradually brought to a pressure higher than normal air pressure, and you breathe while you relax. Hospital HBOT uses hard-shell chambers and pure oxygen under medical supervision for specific, approved medical conditions. Wellness centers typically use mild hyperbaric chambers, which operate at lower pressures.
It's important to be clear: hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a wellness setting is not a treatment or cure for any disease. We offer it as a calm, restful wellness experience, and we encourage anyone with a medical condition to talk with their doctor first.
Why People Are Curious About HBOT
Hyperbaric chambers have gotten plenty of attention from pro athletes and celebrities who talk about using them as part of their routines. Here in North Central Washington, people who ski at Mission Ridge, ride the foothills trails, or train hard for trail races are curious too. Members tell us they enjoy HBOT sessions as quiet, restorative time: a chance to lie down, breathe, and switch off for a while.
Research on mild hyperbaric therapy for wellness purposes is still limited and ongoing, so we don't make promises about specific results. What we can promise is a clean, comfortable chamber and a team that will walk you through every step.
What to Expect During Your First HBOT Session
Before your session
Check in, let us know it's your first time, and tell our team about any health conditions. Wear comfortable, breathable clothing. We'll explain how the chamber works and how pressure changes will feel.
Pressurizing
As the chamber pressurizes, you may feel fullness in your ears, similar to descending in an airplane or driving down from Blewett Pass. Swallowing, yawning, or gently equalizing usually helps. Tell the staff right away if you feel discomfort.
Relaxing in the chamber
Once at pressure, most people simply relax. Some listen to music, some meditate, and plenty of people nap. The chamber has windows, and you can communicate with our team.
Ending your session
The chamber is slowly depressurized, and you may feel your ears adjust again. Take a moment before you get up, drink some water, and enjoy the rest of your day.
Is It Claustrophobic?
It's a fair question. Mild chambers are roomier than many people expect, and you can see out. If you're nervous about enclosed spaces, tell us ahead of time. We'll explain everything and you can stop at any time.
Who Should Talk With a Doctor First?
HBOT is not right for everyone. Ask your doctor before trying it if you have ear or sinus problems, a cold or congestion, lung conditions, a history of collapsed lung, seizures, are pregnant, have any implanted device, or have any ongoing health condition. This article is for general information only and isn't medical advice. Talk with your doctor before starting this service, especially if you're pregnant, take medications, or have a heart condition, blood pressure concerns, or any ongoing health issue.
